Bob Sergent is a highly respected figure within the British Shito-ryu Karate Association (BSKA). His martial arts journey began in 1974 under Professor Dr. Roger Mills at the BSKA Hombu. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he has mastered and holds black belts in three distinct styles: Wado-ryu, Sankukai, and Shito-ryu.
Instructing at the BSKA Hombu in Bracknell, Sensei Sergent is celebrated for his profound dedication to individual members and the association at large. He is particularly noted for his tireless work with the junior sections, where he has consistently strived to bring out the absolute best in his young students.
As the longest-serving member of the BSKA after Kyoshi Mills, Sensei Sergent celebrated his 40th year with the group in 2014. He currently holds the rank of 7th Dan.
Professor Roger Mills (8th Dan), the association's chief instructor, speaks of Bob with the highest regard: "Don’t be fooled by his age – even the most experienced of us have to be wary of those very powerful arms. Many a cocky student has come unstuck trying armlocks on him."
Kyoshi Mills further emphasizes Sensei Sergent's character: "In 1974 there were around 40 new people and all have long since gone except for Bob. In 40 years I’ve never heard him swear, raise his voice, or be rude to anybody. He has shown unswerving loyalty to the club, the association, and to me personally. He serves as a good example to us all."
Sensei Bob Sergent is, as many webmasters and colleagues have noted, a true gentleman of the highest order whose loyalty to the art has never faltered.
